The historical evolution of the concept of simultaneity, from the Ancient Age to the beginning of the 20th century, is one of the most exciting chapters in the set of knowledge concerning physics. And art has never stopped flirting with science for millennia on end. The uniqueness of the cultural action in Buenos Aires lies in bringing artists and neighbors together to create short works on the block where they live or work. An example of this can be witnessed in the play created and produced by Teatro Bombón, a site-specific festival, a term in English that designates works created according to the environment and a given space.
In “La Mujer que Soy,” the narrative occurs simultaneously and synchronously in two interrelated spaces. Each apartment provides a perspective on the story, allowing the audience to understand the whole. The characters circulate from one scenographic space to another and meet only once in an intermediate corridor or hall. This self-defined experience as à la carte lasts half an hour, as each person chooses to see one of the angles or visit the two adjacent niches in the order they wish.
The mirrored structure serves the narrative around Mercedes and Martha. They were married and now live separately but in contiguous environments. After all, they try to define the future of the relationship from Mercedes’ gender transition. His daughter, Cecilia, arises with a new girlfriend searching for temporary shelter.
Director Nelson Valente’s dramaturgy deals with the unconditionality of love and its multiple facets.
Each dwelling has its own aesthetic and furniture. Martha’s is conventional, denotes an Apollonian order, and pastel and ocher colors predominate. Furniture is part of a game. Sober decoration, paintings with landscapes. It gives the feeling of a calm but boring place. Mercedes’ house is Baroque, with a Dionysian appeal, with strident colors. The furniture comes from different origins. Hippie decor, full of souvenirs and stuffed animals. Suggesting a happy home.
Who are they
Teatro Bombón was created in 2014 as a site-specific festival of short works. Its ten editions invited artists of different generations and aesthetics to create more than 60 original works in the fields of theatre, dance, and performance, presented simultaneously and on-demand. An urban dramaturgy by Monina Bonelli and Cristian Scotton in collaboration with artists, local managers, and neighbors, therefore imbued with a community spirit.
